Aren’t these popsicle stick puppets super cute? I can’t take any credit for the idea, because it was all Lucy. She disappeared into the art room for an hour or so one day and then reappeared with these cute puppets. She even used them to perform a puppet show for the entire family!
I just loved this idea so much that I had to share it with you. It’s such as simple craft and something you can just whip out whenever you need a quick go-to activity. Lucy just used markers and washi tape to make hers, but you could use any craft and art supplies you have on hand. This post contains affiliate links.

Materials for Popsicle Stick Puppets
- Jumbo craft sticks
- Drawing material like colored pencils or markers
- Washi tape in different colors and designs (like this)
How to Make Popsicle Stick Puppets
1. Gather your supplies. We used jumbo popsicle sticks, markers, and washi tape (which we keep on an inexpensive spool holder similar to this one).
2. Use markers or colored pencils to draw faces for your puppets. (Lucy even drew the backs of their heads!)
3. Wrap small pieces of washi tape around the stick to make the puppets’ clothes.
Optional: Make some accessories for your puppets: While digging through my craft supplies, Lucy also found some wooden clothespins and liked how they could attach to the popsicle sticks. She drew pictures of things (like this teddy bear), cut them out, glued them to the clothespins, and then attached them to the puppets so the puppets were ‘holding’ the items. This is Theo holding his teddy bear!
I love how simple this craft is and how you can pretty much use any materials you have on hand. It’s perfect for a rainy day and would make a great classroom center too!
