Purple Yarn Art Inspired by Harold and the Purple Crayon
In the story, Harold and the Purple Crayon, a little boy uses his purple crayon to draw all kinds of adventures! This story is such a great way to encourage creativity in children and remind them that their imagination can take them anywhere!
We decided to create our own designs just like Harold, but used purple yarn instead of a crayon!
Materials for Yarn Art
- Purple yarn
- Scissors
- Liquid glue
- Paper bowl or plate
- Wax paper
- Printable purple crayons, glue dots or tape, and white card stock (optional)
*Clipart from Scrappin Doodles.
Directions for Yarn Art
1. Pour the liquid glue into a paper bowl or plate. Place a sheet of wax paper out onto your work surface.
2. Cut off a long piece of purple yarn.
3. Put the yarn into the glue and completely saturate it.
4. Lift the yarn out of the glue. Run one hand down the length of the yarn, removing excess glue.
5. Place your yarn on the wax paper creating a design or picture.
6. Let the yarn dry completely.
7. Once it’s dried, carefully remove the yarn art from the wax paper. It should peel right off!
8. Print the purple crayon printable onto white card stock. Cut out a crayon and use a glue dot or tape to stick it to your yarn art.
9. Display your finished purple yarn art!
Tips
– You must use wax paper for this project to work, as it has a thin layer of wax that allows the finished project to peel off. Parchment paper or regular paper will not work. The yarn will stick permanently to the paper.
– You can also create yarn art directly on paper. Follow the same procedure described above, but rather than placing the yarn on wax paper, make your picture or design directly on regular paper. Once it’s dry you can hang your yarn art picture up to display.
