Toy Car Name Activity for Kids~ Buggy and Buddy

My son has been showing a very strong interest in learning to spell his first name. I decided to build on that interest by creating a fun name activity using one of his favorite playthings- toy cars!

This name activity took me under 10 minutes to make and has been such a great learning resource for my son! (This post contains affiliate links.)

Making & Using the Name Activity

1. Use the black paint and foam brush to paint your child’s name onto the foam board. (I started with the middle two letters and worked my way out towards the sides to be sure I had enough room for his whole name.)

paint the name in black

2. After the black paint has dried, use a white paint pen to draw dashes inside the letters to create roads.

add white lines to make roads

3. Let it dry and you’re ready to play!

I placed one car in each letter before inviting Theo to play. He was so excited when he saw the activity- “That my name!”

Theo started out playing by driving each car around its corresponding letter and often telling me which letter he was driving in.

Later he filled each letter with as many cars as he could!

This is such an easy activity to grab whenever you need something quick and easy.  And it can even be used as a car ramp (like in our homemade car ramp activity)!

  1. Such a cool and fun idea! 🙂

  2. Love this idea, it will be a huge hit in our house!

  3. I love this idea! My son adores anything on four wheels so I will definitely try this one during the summer.

  4. I loooooove the road name!!! I use pre-printed letter cards in my preschool classroom, but this personalized version is more meaningful for the kiddos! 🙂

I would like to use a green dot(traffic light) as to where to start the letter and a red as where to stop, and some arrows for returning.

  6. This is a great idea! Learning your name couldn’t be more fun for kids that love cars.

  7. I’m SO doing this for my little guy, who’s nuts about matchbox cars and could use some extra practice “writing” his name! I love it!! Thanks for sharing this at the After School Linky Party!

  8. Love this activity. My son loves cars and is just starting to recognize letters. Perfect!
