I am a rain lover. I love clouds that hide the sun, the sound of rain on the windows and patio while I’m inside cooking or resting, and watching the kids jumping and laughing in rain puddles. Gray, rainy days are my favorite days! I love them so much I don’t ever want to teach my kids the song, “Rain, rain, go away” because who would ever want to wish the rain away? šŸ™‚ (I need to find a happy rain song~ any ideas?)

I don’t think Lucy would choose rainy days as her favorite. I think she’s more like the majority of people and loves the sun. But, one thing she does love about rainy days is that we sometimes make sun bread!

We’ve had a string of windy, rainy days recently  so Lucy and I pulled out our favorite rainy day book, Sun Bread by Elisa Kleven. It’s a really cute story about the sun being missed so the baker bakes some sun bread to brighten everyone’s day. I love the illustrations and the rhyming text, and what’s especially fun about the book is the recipe to make your own sun bread at the end of the story.

Baking bread is relaxing and fun to do with the kids. And with all the steps and waiting with baking bread, it’s perfect for a rainy day where you are spending most of the day inside the house.

We made a mini sun bread today because we were short on yeast. Lucy loved doing most of the work on her own. We tried to involve Theo, but he wanted none of it (except the eating). He entertained himself doing imaginary baking with my spice jars in the play kitchen.

Here’s Lucy making the dough.

And kneading the dough.

And here we are trying to convince Theo to knead the dough. That’s his little tushy crawling away in the bottom, left corner.

Theo kept busy raiding the pantry for anything he could get his hands on. He pretended to pour and sprinkle everything in a bowl he found. Although he refused to take part in the actual bread making, he was at least supportive of the idea of baking in his own way.

What are some of your favorite things to do inside on rainy days?
