Leprechaun Trap Ideas
Lucy (age 6) just had an absolute blast making her leprechaun trap for school! We used a shoebox as the main component of the trap and then added all kinds of fun details. My favorite part of this leprechaun trap was that Lucy made the majority of it on her own!
Many of these ideas you could adapt to work on your own leprechaun trap. I hope they provide you with all kinds of creative inspiration! (This post contains affiliate links.)
Leprechaun Trap Signs
- We used white model magic to create a base for our signs. We stuck some mini popsicle sticks into the base, and then let it dry. Once the base was dry, we painted it gray.
- I cut some little scraps of paper for signs, and Lucy came up with little messages and wrote them on each one like “Do Not Enter”, “No Gold Here”, and “Not for Leprechauns”. We used glue dots to attach the paper signs to the mini popsicle sticks.
Rainbow Path
- Lucy painted a rainbow using our favorite tempera paint onto some thin, white poster board.
- Once it dried, we cut it out to use as a path leading to the leprechaun trap.
The Ladder
- This was a bit challenging for Lucy to do on her own, so I helped quite a bit.
- To make the ladder we used super tiny, wooden sticks we found at our local craft store and string.
- I tied two pieces of string along both sides of the sticks.
- Once we were happy with the placement of each stick on the string, I put tiny dots of glue onto each knot to hold it in place.
- Once the glue dried, we taped the ladder to the inside of the shoebox.
The Shoebox
- Lucy wanted a sparkly, gold shoebox so I spray painted it gold with some spray paint from our local craft store. (I did this part on my own- the spray paint was not safe for a child to use on his/her own.)
- Lucy added some green painted stripes around her shoebox.
- Once the paint dried, Lucy stuck foam shamrock stickers around the outside.
- She glued a piece of green felt on the inside, bottom of the box.
- She also glued plastic gold coins (similar to these) along the roof of the shoebox and in a little pile on the bottom of the shoebox to entice the leprechaun.
To finish the leprechaun trap, she used a popsicle stick to prop the lid open.
Lucy has her fingers crossed she catches a leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day! I have a feeling he may escape though, those little guys are pretty tricky. At least they usually leave a little treat behind!
