Splatter Paint and Tape Resist Art for Kids
We’ve used resist techniques in art quite a bit on Buggy and Buddy. To make our colorful watercolor flowers we used oil pastels and watercolors. And our heart collage was made using chalk and stencils. I thought this time it’d be fun to try out a resist technique using splatter paint and tape! (This post contains affiliate links.)
Materials for Splatter Paint Art Project
- Some white paper (We used a thick watercolor paper.)
- Paint brushes
- Paints in various colors (We used BioColor Paint. Tempera paint would work well too!)
- Blue painter’s tape
Creating Our Splatter Paint and Tape Resist Art
We started by placing pieces of painter’s tape all over our blank paper. Lucy was able to tear the tape on her own and used the torn pieces to make a design.
Theo, my 2 year old, needed more assistance. Daddy ripped the tape for him, and then Theo placed each piece on his paper.
Once we were satisfied with our tape placement, it was time to get our supplies ready. The kids squirted paint into plastic cups and added a brush to each. They also added white tempera paint to some colors to lighten them a bit.
Now we were ready to begin splatter painting! I decided to set up our materials outside so the kids would feel free to create without worrying about making a mess. I taped their papers to some tree stumps so they wouldn’t blow away, and the kids helped me set the paint cups out in the grass.
I gave them a quick demonstration of splatter painting, and then let the kids go at it.
It took Theo a few tries to get the hang of it.
Lucy was quite focused on her artwork….
…until she spotted an abandoned snail shell. She decided it needed some paint too!
Once they were finished, we let the paint dry.
After the splattered paint was dry, we brought the artwork inside and removed the tape to reveal our designs!
This was definitely a favorite for both kids! I can see a lot more splatter painting in our future!
