I love including sets of children’s books in upcoming holidays and special events. Here’s our favorite list of children’s books for Father’s Day! These would make special gifts for kids to give Dad. Children can even write a little note on the inside cover and date it. What a special keepsake that offers lots of opportunities for reading together!

I absolutely love putting together book sets. Grouping books together can really help children connect the stories to their own lives. As a matter of fact, after reading these books over the last few days, Lucy and I were inspired to make this Homemade Father’s Day book as a special gift for Daddy this year.
Although you may not find the word “Dad” in the title of all the books, we’ve included some books where the father is one of the main characters. Young children really seems to connect with stories as simple as a dad taking his child on an errand or a father reading his child nighttime stories. Sometimes it’s just these simple stories that really become memorable.
After going through many children’s books about dads, these are by far our favorites. (With commentary by Lucy, age 5, in green.)

Just Me and My Dad (Little Critter) by Mercer Mayer
Lucy gave this book to her daddy for Father’s Day a few years ago. It’s a cute story with Little Critter and his dad going on a camping trip. Even now at 5, Lucy enjoys all the funny things that happen in the book. And I love that Theo is finally getting into it. This book is definitely worth buying.
“It’s about when Little Critter went out with his daddy and had fun and helped him put up the tent.”
Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein
This is definitely one of our favorites! Papa is reading Little Chicken bedtime stories, and Little Chicken just can’t stop himself from interrupting. Very cute book! I especially love the cute interactions between Papa and the Little Chicken~ it reminds me of Lucy and Theo’s nightly stories with their Daddy.
“It’s all about a little chicken that interrupts stories. It makes me think about when I interrupt because sometimes I just want to talk right away.”
Daddy Hugs (Classic Board Book) by Karen Katz
This is a board book we bought when Lucy was a baby. It still makes me smile when we read all the different ways to give hugs.
” I remember when one time he kissed the baby 10 times.”
I Love My Daddy by Sebastien Braun
A sweet story of all the special things that Daddy Bear does for his little cub.
“It’s all about a little cub that has a daddy, and they have fun like splashing and getting bathed. He watches over him.”
Oh, Daddy! by Bob Shea
We found t his book at the library and fell in love with it. Daddy keeps doing silly things throughout the story. Even now when Theo and Lucy’s dad is doing silly things, we catch ourselves saying “Oh Daddy!” just like in the story.
“We got this at the library. It’s all about when the daddy does funny things.”
Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale Special Edition (Knuffle Bunny Series)by Mo Willems
The whole family loves the story Knuffle Bunny! Daddy takes Trixie with him on an errand and realizes her treasured Knuffle Bunny ends up missing. Besides the story being entertaining, the illustrations are really neat too!
“A little baby is going to help at the laundromat but accidentally dropped her bunny in the laundry basket and it gets washed. They said “Where’s Knuffle Bunny?” The daddy digs and digs until finally they find it.”
I Love My Daddy Because … by Laurel Porter-Gaylord
A very simple and sweet book! Each page shows a different animal father caring for his baby just as a human father might do.
“It’s all about little animals and how their daddies take care of them. It made me think of when when my daddy always wants to hold my hand.”
Driving Daddy by Hope Vestergaard
This is an adorable rhyming book about a little boy riding on his Daddy’s shoulders. He sees all different kinds of things on his walk.
“This is about a little boy that pretends to drive his daddy, and at the end I know a secret. I’ll tell you later, but he drives his daddy to the park and then (I’ll tell you the secret now), they get ice pops at the end!”
