Print out this free scavenger hunt for kids and head outside on a color walk! Children love trying to find things in nature to represent each color on their list, and it’s such a great way to explore the outdoors together.

Outdoor Scavenger Hunts
The kids and I love exploring the outdoors. Some days we’re searching for sand crabs on the beach, and other days we’re looking for fairy hats (acorn tops) on a walk around town.
To change things up a bit, we sometimes enjoy a more focused walk where we concentrate on finding specific things. Here’s a few scavenger hunts we’ve done in the past. (Be sure to visit each post and print out your own free copy of each scavenger hunt!)
- We’ve gone on sound walks and listened to all the noises around us.
- We’ve gone on outdoor scavenger hunts, trying to find specific things in nature.
- Sometimes we even do scavenger hunts at the beach!
Going on a Color Walk
Our newest outdoor scavenger hunt is a color walk! The kids loved trying to find things in nature to represent each color on their list.
Before heading out we grabbed our free printable scavenger hunt sheet, a pencil, and something to write on. Then we went off to explore!

As the kids discovered things to represent each color, they’d record it on their scavenger hunt sheets. Lucy (age 6) would sketch the items she found…
while Theo (age 3) put an ‘x’ in each box.
What I love about a focused walk is it really encourages children to look for details in nature. We looked closely at flowers and noticed that many were made of more than just one color.
The kids were excited to discover a little trail of ants marching across the patio, some even carrying crumbs.
All kinds of discoveries were made during our color walk scavenger hunt- such a fun outdoor sensory activity!
I think I’ll be printing a few of these out to keep for road trips or in my purse in case I need something to keep the kids occupied unexpectedly.
