One of our all-time favorite children’s books is Corduroy by Don Freeman. It’s a classic book that both my children have always enjoyed and still choose to have read to them at bedtime.
We were inspired by the book, Corduroy, to make this simple button star Christmas ornament perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners. The various buttons and Corduroy’s green overalls in the story inspired our selection of materials for creating this cute button star ornament!

Button Star Christmas Ornament Craft for Kids
Materials for Button Star Christmas Ornament
- Brown cardboard or cardstock
- Green fabric, felt, or paper
- Scissors (Here’s my favorite scissors for cutting fabric and felt and my favorite scissors for cutting paper.)
- Glue
- Buttons
- Single hole punch (This is a must-have hole punch if you do lots of hole punching!)
- Twine, ribbon, or yarn for hanging
- Optional: Free star templates
Directions for Making Button Star Christmas Ornament
1. Print out the free star templates (or draw your own stars) and cut them out.
2. Use the large star template to trace a star onto your brown cardboard or cardstock and cut it out. (We found some sheets of brown cardstock at our local craft store that had neat textures. You could also use cardboard from shipping boxes you get in the mail during the holidays.)
3. Trace the smaller star onto your green fabric, felt, or paper and cut it out.
4. Glue the green star onto your brown star background.
5. Glue buttons all over your star to create a button collage. You can use Christmas colors, colors from the story, or any assortment of colors you’d like!
6. Punch a hole in the top of your star and tie some twine, ribbon, or yarn through it for hanging.
Display on your Christmas tree!
Tips
- If doing this project with a large group of children, give them a variety of brown backgrounds and green smaller stars to choose from.
- It’s helpful to have the stars pre-cut for toddlers and preschoolers.
