In need of a quick, easy, and fun art project for kids? Here’s one of our favorites using watercolors and oil pastels! (This post contains affiliate links to Amazon.)

Art for Kids: Oil Pastels & Watercolors

Materials

  • Oil pastels
  • Watercolors
  • Watercolor paper
  • Paintbrush
  • Cup of water

Directions

1. Draw any design or picture you’d like using the oil pastels. Some children may even prefer sketching their picture in pencil first and then going over it with the oil pastels.

2. Paint over the oil pastel picture with watercolors.

3. Let it dry and display your work proudly!

I always love how the finished artwork turns out- the colors always seem so brilliant, and the added watercolor almost makes the finished piece appear to have texture to it.

This is definitely an art project to add to your list of things to try with kids of any age! And I love how it lends itself to so many different options.  You could compare how the art looks with different color watercolor washes or incorporate the technique into an artist study.

I am the same way. Many things I have bought with good intentions, but have yet to use them. I’ve got some watercolor pencils getting dusty! πŸ™‚

I teach art to children and senior citizens. I have done versions of this project (notably an under the sea scene) with great success. I will now try again with the abstract pattern idea you show – only straight lines or only curves. Great idea, thanks for sharing
