We used dyed pasta and pipe cleaners to make a shape necklace craft for kids. This hands-on activity is a great way to learn all about shapes and can even be worn on your next shape walk! (This post contains affiliate links.)

We’ve been having so much fun with the Macaroni Challenge (hosted by my fellow Rockin’ Art Moms) that we just had to use our dyed pasta for another fun craft- shape necklaces! (Last week we used our dyed pasta to make mosaics.)
The process of making the shape necklaces provides the opportunity for kids to practice their fine motor skills, as well as providing them with a hands-on opportunity to learn about the characteristics of each shape.
And the best part, once the necklace is finished, kids can wear their necklaces on a shape walk at the park, in the neighborhood, or even right in the classroom!
Shape Necklace Craft for Kids
Materials for Shape Necklace Craft
- Dyed pasta or pony beads (You can see how to dye pasta here.)
- Pipe cleaners
- String or yarn
- Scissors
Directions for Shape Necklace Craft
1. String your pasta or beads onto a pipe cleaner.
2. Form the beaded pipe cleaner into a shape. (Some children might need help with this step. Even if you are forming the shape for them, you can still talk about the properties of the shape with them as you’re making it. What should it look like? How many sides should it have? etc.
3. Snip off the ends of the pipe cleaner.
4. Continue this process making different shapes. (We made a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and heart).
5. Once you have all your shapes made, string them onto a piece of yarn.
6. Wear your necklace proudly!
Tips
You can wear the necklace on your next shape hunt. As kids are looking for particular shapes, they can refer to their necklace to compare their findings. Be sure to check out our post on going on a shape hunt at the playground!
