Have you tried making mosaics before? We used a unique art material for our clay mosaics- dyed pasta! We loved using the pasta to create all kinds of unique pictures and designs (and they make the perfect gift for Mother’s Day too). This sensory art project is perfect for all ages!

Creating mosaics using clay is the perfect art activity for any age. Younger children will love the sensory aspect of pressing small pieces into clay, while older children will enjoy creating their very own designs and pictures in the clay.

As our part of the macaroni challenge hosted by the RAMs, we decided to use dyed pasta in our mosaics. We dyed our pasta the day before so it was all colored and ready to go! (This post contains affiliate links.)

Materials for Dyed Pasta Mosaics

  • Clay (or similar material like Stonex Clay)
  • Small pasta dyed in various colors (Here’s our tutorial for dying pasta.)
  • Newspaper
  • Optional: clay tools, toothpicks, etc. for adding texture to your design

Procedure for Dyed Pasta Mosaics

1. Place some clay onto a sheet of newspaper.

2. Roll out your clay to form a tile about 1/4-1/2 inch thick. Cut your edges to make them straight.

3. Press the pasta into the clay to create your design or picture.

4. Let the project dry completely.

We started off by creating flower designs in the clay.

Later we tried creating different ocean animals and scenes- an octopus, fish, and sea star!

Tips

  • Try using different shaped pastas to inspire even more creativity.
  • You can even paint the clay once your project has completely dried.

I just love your idea, and thank you for the clay resource! You’ve really inspired me to do this with my class with all of the leftover pasta — we sure have enough. Thank you!! xo Bar
