Today I’m sharing a super easy tutorial on how to make your very own child-sized chalkboards perfect for back-to-school! We used some wood, chalkboard paint, Mod Podge Collage Clay and buttons to create these adorable little chalkboards for kids.
With the start of school getting closer, I thought it’d be fun to make some little chalkboards for the kids to use for practicing all kinds of skills they’ll be working on during the new school year. And what better way to embellish them than by using the Decoden crafting technique! (Decoden is the art of decorating things with all kinds of little items and trinkets!)
The chalkboards were so easy to make, especially with the Mod Podge Collage Clay sent to us. I was able to create a 3-D collage border for the chalkboards with the whipped clay and some buttons I had at home. (Collage Clay is not recommended for children ages 12 and under, and the product is not edible. Small parts are a choking hazard for children.)
Materials for Making Your Own Decoden Chalkboard
- Piece of crafting wood the size you would like your chalkboard to be (We bought ours at our local craft shop.)
- Chalkboard paint
- Mod Podge Collage Clay (You can find collage clay at your local Michaels!)
- A variety of buttons
How to Make Your Decoden Chalkboard
1. Start by painting the surface of your wood with the chalkboard paint. (Be sure to follow the directions on your paint’s container for proper application.) I painted 3 coats onto my wooden panel.
2. Once the paint has completely dried, you’re ready to begin decorating!
3. Select the tip you’d like to use for your collage clay and attach it the bag.
4. Apply the Mod Podge Collage Clay to one side of your chalkboard.
5. Gently press some buttons right into the collage clay along the edge of your chalkboard.
6. Do this for each remaining side.
7. Allow the chalkboard to dry completely.
To simplify this project even more, some craft stores sell little chalkboards with an unfinished wood frame. We bought the chalkboard below from our local craft store and just used the Mod Podge Collage Clay and buttons to decorate it. Super easy!
The kids have loved using their chalkboards for practicing letters and drawing pictures! This was such a fun and easy back-to-school craft!
