Hi, I am making a kite for my 4 yro grand daughter and found your site with instructions of how to make a kite. Generally your instructions and accompanying images are easy to follow until I get to your point 7.
The text says 'poke two holes into the top and bottom points of the kite.' It is unclear whether the holes go through the kite material (I am using plastic not newspaper) or perhaps through the dowel? Poking a hole through the material doesn't make sense to me or my wife as it will surely tear when flying in a decent wind. The purpose of this note seems to be to tie a string (which I am guessing you are calling a 'brindle' (even though I can't find the meaning of 'brindle' in any online dictionary - did you mean bridle perhaps? Brindle means a mottled colour often relating to horse) the length of the central (vertical) dowel (24 inches)? I assume you then tie the 'flying string' to the 'brindle' string, the real purpose of the 'brindle' string being to be able to adjust this tied string when testing what location proves best?
It appears you are only talking about one string whereas the accompanying image seems to show two strings?
Given I can't understand the note about poking a hole, I am thinking of simply tying the 'brindle string around the dowel at both the extreme top and bottom of the central doweling securing this with a strong tape, would this work?

Hi, I'm a librarian in Indiana. I'd like to do this craft with the teens at my library--may I use the image of just the flying kite (with your site info on it) to promote the craft? Thanks!

[…] How to Make a Kite: I can’t even put into words how much fun we had making our very own kites using newspaper! The actual building of the kites was a fun activity for the whole family to do together, and then… the flying! Oh, how fun! We were outside for hours running around with our homemade kites!
