Lucy and I have been reading Emeraldalicious quite a bit lately. I think she’s mesmerized by all the colorful pictures and the magical feel of the story. She also loves the main character’s wand! We thought it would be fun to make our own spring inspired wand.
Luckily, everything we needed we found at Michaels, and it was very inexpensive~ paper straws, wooden bird to trace, card stock, thin ribbon, spring wire garland and tape.
Since we are so into birds lately, we obviously went with a bird themed wand, but you could do a heart (like in the story), flower, star…. so many options! We bought a little wooden bird to trace on card stock. We traced and cut out two birds from pink card stock (for a front and back to the bird). We also cut out two little hearts and glued those on the bird for the wings.
Next, we cut some short pieces of ribbon and some wire garland to decorate the wand. We slipped them into the top of the straw and taped them into place.
Then, we just stapled our bird on top and we were done!
Lucy and Theo have been running all over the house using the wands in all sorts of pretend play. (Maybe they’ll figure out a way to make the wands emit just enough magic to cast a ‘clean house’ spell…. fingers crossed!)
