I made my map for bare feet to explore! In boxes with low sides I collected from Costco as I shopped and a plastic box for the river. Filled one box with Easter grass, one with shaving cream and silver glitter, the next one was filled with potting soil and a few large smooth rocks, ( I love rocks) clippings from a few bushes tapped to the outside of the box for mud and woods. Our bear cave was also a box (with a cave like opening )covered with brown paper and tree branches, there were a few branches in side some dead leaves, a big rock, to keep the box down and big stuffed bear inside. Since it was dark inside I attached a flashlight to the outside so the children could look inside. Who doesn't love a flashlight? They were reluctant at first, it was a crisp day and taking off shoes at school was not their norm. Once they tried it they went through as many times as they wanted. It is something they will never forget!

I love this idea so much! I am going to try it out with students with autism.
I am adapting it a few ways (as my 'kids' are slightly older)!

1. Working on printing/spelling and writing size. I am going to have my students number the boxes 1-6 and write out what will go in (grass, river, etc).
2. Since we are always working on sequencing and telling stories I love the idea of this becoming the 'story map'. I plan on having them retell the story based on their map. I am actually hoping for some variation in the placement of items so we can have a conversation about it :)
3. I love this for recalling information AND planning out a sequence. I think this story will be our gateway, but we will continue using the map idea to discuss other books, write/plan their own stories, and helping them to understand conflict/resolution in stories.
I am SO excited by the possibilities for this activity! In addition to adapting it with my students, I cannot wait to try it as planned out here with my son when he gets a little older!
Thank you for sharing!!
