Print out this free printable bird book and record all your backyard and neighborhood birds next time you’re on a walk or birdwatching! It’s designed for younger children (preschool, kindergarten, and first grade) and provides space for illustrations and details for each bird.

Do your kids get excited to spot birds like ours do? We are huge birdwatchers here! Even our 2 year old, Theo, gets into it!
Birding with children is one of our favorite things to do. Birdwatching is free, you can do it just about anywhere, and it’s a great learning opportunity that takes place right outside!
If you’d like to learn more about how we encourage birdwatching, please see our previous post, Birding with Kids.
To make birding even easier for our kids, I created a birdwatching book specifically for younger children. I kept the wording and graphics simple so the kids can easily focus on their work. There’s a place to record the date a particular bird was spotted, an area to draw a picture of the bird, a place to write the name of the bird, and then a section at the bottom of the page to record any other information you’d like~ maybe what the bird was doing when you saw it or where you were when you saw the bird.
See it in action here:
It’s pretty easy to put together. First, print out the free cover and fold it in half. Then print out as many bird book pages as you’d like. (I printed mine out back-to-back to save paper.) Cut the bird book pages in half and place them inside the folded front cover. Then just staple it closed!

We keep our bird books right by our backdoor with our other birding resources so we can easily access them when we spot a new bird. Some of our favorite books for birding are:
Beginning Birdwatcher’s Bookby Sy Barlowe
Young Birders Guide Birds NA (Books) (Kids)
Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America (Peterson Field Guides)
You can see my previous post, Bird Books & Resources for Adults and Children, for some of our other favorite birdwatching resources.
Since the homemade book is also nice and lightweight, we can bring it with us on walks and outings in case we spot any new birds! I’m sure these birding books will be coming along with us on our future summer road trips!
