The Preschool Book Club is back this week with creative activities for kids inspired by the popular children’s book, I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More! by Karen Beaumont. Every other week we’ll be sharing some fun activities for kids based on the book of the week. (Be sure to check out all my activities for kids inspired by children’s books!)
Color and Counting Math Game for Kids
I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More! is a silly story about a child painting just about everything he can get his paints onto. Even when his paints get taken away, the little boy rescues them from the closest and gets busy painting different parts of his body in all kinds of designs and colors.
My preschooler really connected with this story and thought it was hilarious! The first few times reading it, he just enjoyed watching what the boy did and laughing. During other readings he began noticing the rhyming pattern in the text, as well as noticing all the patterns and designs the child painted on his body and throughout the house.
Because Theo really responded to the child painting himself and noticing the colors and designs in the illustration, I decided to create a free printable math game for kids that incorporates decorating yourself just like in the story! It’s a very open-ended game that combines both art and math, and it can be played independently or with your friends!
I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More! Counting and Coloring Math Game for Kids
Materials for Counting Math Game
- Markers, crayons, paints, or colored pencils
- Wooden craft block to use as a die (We painted each side of the cube with six different colors. You could also color the sides of the die with a marker.)
- Free Printable Math Game Sheet
Directions for Playing the Counting Math Game
1. Print out the body outline to use for the math game.
Draw a face and hair on your printable person so it looks just like you!
2. Roll the die. Use a marker (in the color designated by the die) to draw a design onto your person- just like in the story. It can be anywhere!
3. Roll the die again and do the same thing with the next color.
4. Continue until you are happy with your final design.
5. Count how many designs you made using each color and record the number on your printable.
Tips and Modifications for the Game
You can simplify the activity by only drawing dots on you person based on the colors rolled. This makes it easier to count at the end.
Lucy and Theo also wanted to be able to draw on the back of their people so they traced the body outline on the back of their paper to add designs to.
Here’s Lucy and Theo’s finished drawings!
