Quick & Easy Winter Tree Art

Lucy and I have been so into everything hearts lately, our winter seasonal crafting has been neglected it seems. So today we decided to take a break from all things hearts and make a winter tree! I had pinned this post from Art Projects for Kids and decided it would be perfect for today. I simplified the directions a bit for Lucy, and she had so much fun! She even decided she wanted it to be a special winter tree just like at the end of Fletcher and the Falling Leaves so we found some sequins to add at the end!

Inspired by the blog, Art Projects for Kids, and the beautiful illustration at the end of the book, Fletcher and the Falling Leaves!

Supplies: oil pastels (or crayons), light blue paper, white tempera paint, sequins, glue

Directions:

1. Have your child turn the paper vertical (great mini lesson opportunity to teach vertical and horizontal!)

2. Take a black or brown oil pastel (or crayon) and draw a line for the tree trunk. For now a thin line is fine. Don’t worry about thickening it yet.

3. Then make a large ‘v’ shape on top the tree trunk.

4. Next, draw more lines and ‘v’ shapes coming of various branches.

5. Once your child is satisfied with their tree lines, they can thicken the trunk and any branches they’d like.

6. Use a white oil pastel (or crayon) and draw the horizon line on your paper. Color in the ground white. Draw some snowflakes in the sky if you would like!

7. Mix some tempera paint with a tad bit of water. Brush your white paint over the white oil pastel at the bottom of your paper.

8. Glue some icy colored sequins onto your branches.

9. Let it dry and enjoy!
