We love seasonal children’s books and keep them right next to our nature table to enjoy throughout the season. Winter themed children’s books are always some of our favorites!

We have a seasonal book area in our home located right near our nature table. (Having the seasonal books nearby allows the kids to enjoy books related to the nature treasures they’re collecting outside.) As the seasons change, so do the books that we put out to enjoy. The kids always get so excited when it’s time to welcome the new books for the season.
We just recently pulled out all our winter books for kids and have been reading them daily! Here are some of the favorites from our winter book collection with commentary by Lucy, age 4, in green. (This post contains affiliate links.)
Winter Themed Children’s Books
Winter by Gerda Muller
“It shows you what you do in the winter.”
We have the Gerda Muller books for each season and love them! Just like the others, this winter book has no text allowing for so many possibilities when reading this story. The illustrations are full of fun, active things that can be done in winter.
The Story of the Snow Children by Sibylle von Olfers
“It’s about these little angels and a princess that live in a magical land. And a little girl gets to go visit them.”
A perfect little make-believe story of a girl visiting a beautiful snow kingdom! This story seems to always spark Lucy’s imagination!
Flannel Kisses by Linda Crotta Brennan
“It has rhyming. And it tells you about winter time.”
We fell in love with the summer equivalent of this story, Marshmallow Kisses, so we had to get the winter one! I love how the concise text still conveys so much (Lucy loves how it rhymes~ it’s fun to read.) The illustrations are great too!
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
“I really like Peter. I’ve seen other Peter books, and I love them. Peter really wanted to go outside to play in the snow. He made snow angels, made a snowman, and climbed snow mountains. Peter tried to keep the snow in his pocket, but it melted.”
This is an old favorite! I can remember Lucy being enthralled with this story when she was 2. She always loved the part where Peter would make footprints in the snow, and we’d pretend we were also making footprints while we were reading along. (As a matter of fact, she loved it so much we made the story out of felt pieces to go with our homemade felt board.) This story is perfect to practice retelling.
The Hat by Jan Brett
“I love The Hat. It’s about when a porcupine finds this stocking, and he puts his nose inside and it sticks on him! Wow, how silly he is!”
Another cute book! (Aren’t all of Jan Brett’s books adorable?) I love the additional illustrations she puts on the pages that give you clues as to what’s coming next.
Some Books on our Winter Wish List
I’ve got these books on our wish list for Christmas. I think they will be our next additions! Have any of you read these yet?
