One of our favorite Easter crafts is this oil pastel and watercolor egg art project based on the story, Rechenka’s Eggs. It’s fun for a wide variety of ages and is the perfect way to decorate your home for Easter!

I absolutely LOVE the book, Rechenka’s Eggs by Patricia Polacco! It’s such a beautiful story about kindness, friendship, and forgiveness and full of the most beautiful illustrations. The kids and I have been reading it over and over the last few days. Since we have been mesmerized by all the beautiful eggs in the book, we decided to make our own patterned eggs using paper, oil pastels and watercolors to decorate our home for Easter!
Materials for Easter Craft
- Watercolor paper
- Oil pastels
- Watercolors and paintbrush
- Scissors
- Rechenka’s Eggs (optional)
Directions for Easter Craft
1. Draw or trace a large egg shape on your paper. (I printed this one out and then traced it onto the back of an old cereal box so the kids would have a sturdy egg shape to trace.)
2. Use oil pastels to draw and color designs on your eggs. Lucy, Theo and I studied the beautiful eggs in Rechenka’s Eggs for inspiration.
3. Use watercolors to paint over your designs and let dry.
4. Let your Easter egg craft dry.
5. Once they’re dry you can cut them out and hang them somewhere special!
