A few weeks ago as Theo was sitting at the dinner table eating his afternoon snack, I noticed he was using his pretzels to make different letters of the alphabet. It looked like so much fun I couldn’t help but join in!

Making Letters of the Alphabet Using Pretzels
Theo already had the classic shaped pretzels, so I also grabbed a handful of pretzel sticks, and together we used the pretzels to make all kinds of letters!
It was a fun learning opportunity. We talked about the shapes we needed to form different letters and tried to find pretzels that contained those particular shapes. Then we would break the pretzels (or often bite them!) to get the perfect sized pieces for the letters we were creating.
First we used pretzels to spell his name…
…and then we decided to make the entire alphabet together!
We also had some fun just being goofy with our pretzels and making interesting shapes!
Tips
- This is such a simple activity and is perfect for a wide range of ages. Theo (currently in preschool) had an easier time making upper case letters and really enjoyed spelling his name.
- Making the lowercase alphabet was a bit more challenging, but made for a fun activity to do together! Kindergarteners would have more success doing this independently.
- Be sure to use the regular-sized classic pretzels for the curves. The minis are a bit more challenging for little hands to break.
We saved the pretzels we didn’t eat for a future snack, and I’m sure there will be much more creating with them too!
