If you read our most recent post, Citrus Paper Craft for Kids, then you know we frequently eat oranges in the winter. Since Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, I thought it would be fun to make some heart shaped garland from all our orange peels! It’s such an easy craft for kids and requires very few materials. (And it smells absolutely wonderful!) This post contains affiliate links.
Orange Peel Heart Garland Craft for Kids
Materials for Orange Peel Garland
- Oranges
- Baker’s twine or other thick string
- Scissors (or mini heart shaped cookie cutter)
- Large darning needle
Directions for Making Orange Peel Garland
1. Peel an orange and save the peel while snacking on your yummy fruit!
2. Using your scissors, cut the orange peel into small hearts.
3. Cut off a long piece of baker’s twine. Attach it to a large darning needle. (In this darning needle set, the largest needle is perfect! It’s not sharp at all and is a good size for little kid hands.)
4. Have your child use the needle to go in one side of the heart and out the other side. Slide the heart down onto your string. Continue doing this with the remaining hearts.
As the orange peel dries, it hardens and stays in place wonderfully on the string. (The dried peel does become heavy, so it needs to be hung pretty tightly to keep the hearts from flipping over.)
We used our heart garland to decorate our winter nature table!
Tips
- You can also hang your hearts vertically.
- We would slowly add to our garland each time we ate an orange. After a while we had enough hearts to decorate!
