Tidepool Science Experiment: This is a great way to demonstrate how high and low tides create tide pools. I love that when you’re done experimenting, you can use the materials for a tide pool sensory bin!
Moon Journal for Kids: Head outside each evening and record the moon’s appearance and location using this free printable moon journal. This turned into such a fun family event for us to do after dinner each day!
How to Make a Kite: I can’t even put into words how much fun we had making our very own kites using newspaper! The actual building of the kites was a fun activity for the whole family to do together, and then… the flying! Oh, how fun! We were outside for hours running around with our homemade kites!
Launch Ping Pong Balls with a Homemade Lever: Create a lever using a yardstick and coffee can. You’ll be amazed how much kids will learn about this simple machine while having all kinds of fun launching ping pong balls!
Baking Soda and Vinegar Bursting Baggies: These bursting baggies are tons of fun for the kids! You most likely have everything you need right now in your kitchen!

Finding Symmetry in Nature: On your next hike or family walk around the neighborhood, keep your eyes for symmetry in nature. We found all kinds of examples and took pictures to explore more at home with mirrors.
Colorful Chemical Reactions: My kids would probably rank this as one of their top favorite science experiments of all time. Kids will be kept busy for hours creating their own chemical reactions with baking soda and vinegar!
Sink or Float: Here’s another science activity that’s perfect for a hot day- exploring sinking and floating. Fill a big tub with water and collect all kinds of items to try out in the water. (Includes a free printable)
Birding with Kids: The summer months are the perfect time to get to know your backyard birds. We printed out this free bird journal and recorded all the bird visitors we spotted in our own backyard.
Bubble Science with Kids: Blowing bubbles is one of the most classic outdoor activities for kids- we never tire of it! Why not take advantage of bubble fun by incorporating some science into your bubble play this summer.
